Nepenthes are named for the pitchers at the end of each leaf, which contain digestive fluid for trapping insects and small animals. The pitchers of Nepenthes are highly modified leaves, adapted for carnivory. They are filled with a mixture of digestive enzymes and water, and their slippery inner surfaces, aided by downward-pointing hairs, prevent prey from escaping.
